Healthy Credit Card Companies

I’ve had a credit card with a major bank for the past 9 years.  It was the first credit card I applied for in college and the APR rate at the time, 10.99% seemed like a lot.

About a month ago I called in because of a mistake in paying off the remaining balance of the card.  The gentleman on the line was very nice and professional, but there is something even deeper and more disturbing about our conversation that was not reflected by this man’s attitude and demeanor as he helped me fix my problem. Fort ChamblyLuck landed me in Canada during the yearly La Fête Bières & Saveurs at Fort Chambly. What a beautiful location!

While several locals were surprised to know that I was there all the way from the United states they quickly shifted into teacher mode sharing with my their favorite beer and stories about what they loved about their home, the french-speaking Canadian province of Quebec. (more…)

SVN Spring Conference: Change Philanthropy

How wonderful it is to know that there are foundations out there going beyond the traditional; leading in a way that benefits innovative entrepreneurs and in turn society as a whole. The “Change Philanthropy” breakout session brought together three women who are leading the pack in this area- Alicia Korten of ReNual, Mary Stranahan of Needmor Foundation, and Julia Novy-Hildesley of Lemelson Foundation – to discuss high impact giving. Are the ideas behind Earth Day ‘over the hill’ or mainstream?

In a world where everyone seems to be trying to gain clout by claiming ‘greenness’ one would think that the concepts which drove the founding of the first Earth Day 40 years ago must not only be in the forefront of our minds, but prevalent everywhere we look.  While there does seem to be a growing number of individuals whose lives and work is towards the betterment of the planet, have we yet reached the tipping point that care for the planet and each other is a mainstream, fully-embraced concept? Fame Factor

I can say whatever I want, for now, without fear because I am not famous and hold little sway over public opinion. It is true that you all are reading this, and you matter, but since my readership is not yet at the level of Huffington Post, Oprah, or BigGovernment.com It is highly unlikely that I will be sued for libel. The socially just internet. Oxymoron?

I am annoyed by the Internet and at the same time I am in lust.  Like a troublesome boyfriend, the Internet seems to be the answer to so many problems – everything you need a few clicks away.

Today, the rush to get ‘online’ for organizations may very well be the difference between failure versus legitimacy and future success.

The biggest problem I see is that for the portion of our population with limited or no access, the Internet is not an answer.

Technologically, there is and will continue to be a separation between those who have and those who do not, like there is with salary.  Each new innovation increases the knowledge gap that someone just becoming computer literate must leap.  It may be instinctual to someone who has been immersed with computer use their whole life, but what about the urban and rural poor that have not?  What about those who are older and just have never picked up the skill?  What about those who have no need to use a computer for their livelihood?  What is their right to have access to the same information?

Obama recognizes the need for transparency (BRAVO!!) with regards to the recovery work being done in America.  To answer this challenge the administration has posted the information regarding this transparency online.

However, how do US citizens who are not computer literate access the same information?

Is the Internet just another form of oppression?  This is a challenge that needs to be addressed.  How do we make information accessible?  Is a socially just Internet a potential reality?

I think a socially just Internet would look like something that used vacant storefronts to teach, entrepreneurs and volunteers to train passersby, engage the community and a general recognition that while some information should be available online we shouldn’t give up on the person to person connection that happens in a community.

What do you think?
